OVERVIEW
Shangri-La resort | Shangri-La Hotel | Shangri-La reviews
What to expect: The soaring marble lobby, renovated in February 2004, is inspired by the mythical Shangri-La of the novel Lost Horizon. It evokes a Himalayan landscape with its huge glass walls, exotic artwork, sweeping staircase, and large, cloud-like crystal chandeliers, whose black crystals and topaz beads reflect brilliant colors. It's a busy rendezvous for government officials, businesspeople, and conventioneers.
Amenity highlights: Major renovations in August 2004 introduced vibrant new restaurants and extensive business amenities, including complimentary wireless internet access in hotel public areas. The hotel is surrounded by a 3,000-square-meter (32,000-sq-ft) traditional Chinese garden with koi pond, pavilions, waterfalls, and 100 species of flowers and trees. Recreational facilities include a 25-meter (65-ft) indoor pool and a fitness center with sauna.
Insider tip: Purple Bamboo Park, one of the largest in Beijing, offers a refreshing break from the city, with picturesque islands, the remnants of an old temple, and three lakes connected by five bridges. It's about 1.5 km (1 mi) from the hotel.
