Vancouver is a city located in southwest British Columbia, Canada. The city was named in honor of Captain George Vancouver, an English explorer. It's part of the metropolitan area of Greater Vancouver Regional District, which, with a population of 2,180,737 habitants (2006 estimate), is the largest metropolitan area in the west Canadian and the third in the country after Toronto and Montreal. Vancouver itself has 587,891 habitants of many different ethnic backgrounds: the mother tongue of more than half of its residents is not English. The city is growing rapidly (information 2007) and it is expected that the metropolitan population reaches 2.6 billion by 2020. Vancouver is located beside the Strait of Georgia, which separate it from Vancouver Island. It is located in the Pacific time zone (UTC-8) and the Pacific Maritime ecozones. The city is part of the Burrard Peninsula and is among the incoming Burrard (north) and the Fraser River River (South).
