Playa Del Carmen Vacations
Playa del Carmen, Mexico, is one of the most charming spots on the Mexican Caribbean and a hub from which to visit the stellar attractions of the Riviera Maya. Playacar, as the locals call it, is a radiant city in the middle of the country blessed with a blue, cloudless sky and the sparkling turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.
Located in the heart of the Mayan world; 42 miles south of Cancun in the state of Quintana Roo. Playa del Carmen has a semi-tropical climate, making it popular for aquatic activities such as diving and exploring beautiful coral reefs.Originally a small fishing town, tourism to Playa del Carmen began with the passenger ferry service to Cozumel, an island across the Cozumel Channel and world famous scuba diving destination. It did not take long for visitors to realize that some of the best beaches and vibes in Mexico were to be found in Playa. While passing through, many people realized that it was a nice place to relax away from the crowds of Cancún but with better quality beaches and turquoise waters.
Playa del Carmen, or just "Playa", has one of the most laid-back main steets in the Americas. Avenida Quinta, or "Fifth Avenue" is all pedestrian for 2 miles, a line of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops that can be walked without fear of cars. The restaurants to the north, in the neighborhood of Little Italy, are of exceptional value. This area has undergone rapid development over the past two years with many new luxury residential condominium buildings, restaurants, boutiques and entertainment venues. Currently there are plans to develop six luxury boutique hotels, several internationally recognized chain restaurants including PF Changs, Hard Rock Cafe, Ruth's Chris and the Cheesecake Factory as well as a small upmarket shopping plaza offering designer boutiques, a small cinema, luxury condominiums and the first international House of Blues entertainment venue. El Palacio de Hierro has also begun construction of a luxury department store at the corner of "Fifth Avenue" and Constituyentes.
Playacar is a residential and tourist development in Playa del Carmen, just south of the main urban area. In this development most of the all-inclusive hotels, the aviary, and the golf course are located. There are two phases, phase 1 is mostly residential with a few hotels and some stores. Phase 2 contains the largest all inclusive resorts along with the golf course and a significant number of residential properties.
It is also a great place to camp and enjoy golf and natural attractions suitable for ecotourism. If you are visiting Playa del Carmen and plan to dive, cross over to the nearby island of Cozumel. There, you will find the Cozumel Reefs National Park, including the Gran Arrecife Maya (Great Mayan Reef), part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and considered the second largest in the world. Among the most memorable experiences that await include sailing, kayaking, fishing from a luxury yacht, traveling to the archaeological remains of Tulum, or visiting cenotes (from the Mayan word for a sinkhole formed by a collapsed cave ceiling) in the surrounding villages. Playa del Carmen is breathtaking with its beautiful beaches and Mayan culture fused with modernity, which is evident on every street corner.
