SANTIAGO BAY RESTAURANT

Beginning at the entrance to Las Hadas, and ending with the road to L'Recif (Vida del Mar), these restaurants comprise the Bahia de Santiago, a 5-mile-long stretch with numerous large and small restaurants, bars and nightclubs. This information was obtained from the 170-page tourist guidebook

JUANITO’S:

One of the most popular restaurants in town for locals and gringos. Great breakfasts (both Mexican and American favorites), a varied lunch menu, including hamburgers, fried chicken, barbequed ribs, milkshakes, and Mexican food (some of the best in town). Very inexpensive. Sometimes they are very busy and service gets a little slow, but ask for something and you’ll get it. Watch cable TV or read an American newspaper while you wait. Family owned and managed by John and Esperanza Corey. Phone and fax service, photo copies made, internet café. Open 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Phone 333-1388 or fax 333-2019

SAN GERMAN:

A new restaurant with live entertainment, such as Mariachi music, with an excellent, but pricey menu. Be careful--they add the tip of 10% to the bill. Great atmosphere, comfortable seating, excellent for large groups, or intimate twosomes. Good service, so far, clean bathrooms, comfortable seating. This bugs me: They charge an extra 20 pesos if you want your shrimp without the shell.

NIGHT LIFE

Manzanillo provides excellent and varied night life for visitors.   As with most night clubs on Mexico's coasts, they don't stop till the sun comes up!   Some night clubs charge an all inclusive cover fee; some a smaller cover and drinks on top, like the UK.    Drinks are served all night - don't even consider going to a nightclub until about 11pm or even Midnight.   Nightclubs keep going all morning and people will start to leave at around 5 or 6 am.    Trendy places change frequently here - Connect to the Mexperience Directory for the latest information about Manzanillo's best night s!
spot

Beach Clubs - Some hotels provide night-club facilities in areas that lead out onto the beach... so does the music, dancing and drinks!

KING KONG DANCING CLUB: The is the Mexican working man’s (and women’s) establishment, usually having a live band playing music commonly known as "banda." (Banda music can best be described by comparing it to country music with a distinct south-of-the-border beat and twang.) No need to dress up here; T-shirts and jeans are acceptable. Mexicans are sometimes searched at the door, but foreigners are treated with the utmost respect. Friday and Saturday nights can get kind of wild, especially later on, when the local caballeros have imbibed more than a fair share of beer.

Mexicans are generally very friendly, and might even ask to sit down at your table, and then proceed to talk to you in a smattering of English. If you don’t want to be bothered, politely decline and ask for assistance from the manager. He or she will see to it that you’re not bothered. Another thing that seems to happen only to foreigners is that Mexican men will want to ask your lady to dance. If you don’t object, and your lady doesn’t mind either, keep in mind that pretty soon all the single men and even men with dates will be asking her. If you don’t want to share, you (and your girl) should say, "No gracias."

VOG DISCO & VOG BAR:

Two places, same owner. Dance to a throbbing beat in the disco. Opens at 10 p.m. and the music goes till 3 a.m. Light show at midnight. Probably the nicest disco in town, but usually frequented by the very young. Cover charge. Men must wear long pants. No T-shirts or shorts allowed. The bar next door has pool tables. Sometimes on weekends it's hard to get a table. Not many women play pool here.

RESTAURANT/BAR VAQUERO:

Good mesquite-broiled steaks, sold by the kilo (2.2 lb.) Hint: 1 kilo is for four people, a half-kilo is for 2, and one-quarter kilo is an individual order. You do not have to buy a full kilo. Or you can order your steaks by the gram: 350 grams is a regular steak, and if you’re really hungry, go for a 500-gram cut. The menu is in Spanish, but there are English-speaking waiters. A delicious steak is called arrachera (marinated, tender flank steak). It can be ordered "especial," which means a thicker cut, and much more flavorful and tender. Bean soup is served with the meal, as are chips and salsa. Baked potatoes are available ala carte, as are tasty grilled sweet onions. The charm of this place is that it’s designed like an old-fashioned cantina, but it’s air-conditioned. Credit cards accepted. No need for reservations. Weekend evenings often have a singer with keyboard.
