Once called Xaman-Ha (waters of the north) by the ancient Maya, Playa del Carmen has become a major travel destination for visitors from all over the world. The ultra relaxed atmosphere and virgin beaches are only part of the allure.
The worlds second largest reef lies just offshore with acres of multi-colored coral beds and tropical fish. Tours can be arranged or you may just swim out to the reef if you desire. These tranquil waters and magnificent undersea gardens are breathtaking and allows water sports from basic snorkeling, scuba diving, deep sea fishing, sailing and kayaking to all sorts of motorized water vehicles.

Playa is also located near the center of the Mayan Riviera which makes it a perfect place to base excursions into the Mayan jungle, cenotes, water parks and hundreds of other attractions.
Buses leave Playa every 15 minutes for Cancun all day into the night so a day in the north is easily spent without driving. Ancient Maya ruins like Xel-Ha, Tulum, Muyil and Coba are also close at hand and the ferry to Cozumel leaves from Playa just about every hour.
Playa also has a pedestrian avenue called Quinta Avenida which is home to any number of boutiques, sidewalk cafes, hundreds of small shops, cantina's and restaurants. Hand made items all over Mexico and even Guatemala and Belize are sold on the street and small shops.
The nights in Playa offer a variety of fine dining to people watching to dancing on the beach. In the Mexican tradition nightclubs operate well into the wee hours of the morning and around 2:00 A.M. it is hard to find a place on the dance floor.
