OVERVIEW
Maroma Resort Spa resort | Maroma Resort Spa Hotel | Maroma Resort Spa reviews
One day an architect flew down the coast in a small plane and about 30 miles south of Cancun he discovered the loveliest of bays where a forest of stately coconut palms promenaded toward the turquoise sea. He fell in love with the place and bought it from a man who made his living drying and selling the coconut meat, harvested from the 200-acre plantation.
Along with the plantation and a beautiful piece of jungle and beach, the ranch included the thatched hut of the owner and a caretaker named Timoteo who stayed for 14 years and whose five sons were born there without the help of doctor, nurse or midwife.
In 1980 Sally just happened to take a spur-of-the-moment trip to Cancun for a week of sun before the harsh winter of Chicago set in, This is where she met the owner and architect named Jose Luis. How's Chicago?? he asked, Cold! she answered, and in that moment both of their lives changed: He introduced her to his beautiful Maroma where they swam, drank coconut water and sat in the shade of the old thatched roof.
He showed her the jungle and the reefs, told her he had come by boat before Timoteo cut the road out of the jungle with his machete, drew her an image of the house he would build here so he could fish and swim everyday. Soon his dream became hers and she left Chicago for the warmth of the tropics.
When they were ready to build, the old thatched hut seemed the perfect place to start and it became the heart of the house where the original support poles are still visible in one wall. They planned a simple weekend cottage which soon grew to a two bedroom, artist's studio and dining room for ten.
During the following years the house continued to grow room by room, and Sally and Jos?Luis shared it with many visitors from around the world, all of whom confirmed by the pleasure of being there that Maroma is an extraordinary place.
Their next dream began to take shape when a house they built for sale was damaged by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. They took the opportunity to use the structure as the seed of a long-dreamed of small Hotel where they could share Maroma with more friends than could comfortably fit in their home. The Hotel grew as their house had, the gardens flourished, the buildings took graceful shape, the kitchen began to whisper delicious messages, and the Hotel filled with new friends who came to be enchanted by the primal rhythm of the ocean and the jungle.
Today Maroma is a vibrant reality dedicated to pampering its guests, each of whom is counted as an honored member of the Maroma family.

RECREATION

Riviera Maya, Mexico -- Kinan [pronounced - keynan] is the Maya word for "the source of the sun". Similar to the Asian concept of Chi, Kinan is often referred to as the individual inner energy. Opened in the fall of 2004, the new spa combines Mayan concepts to offer a full range of spa services in unique environments including treatment rooms with private gardens, four outdoor massage palapas (small thatched roof pavilions) and a rooftop tower treatment room with 360 degree views that capture the two ecological systems of Maroma the jungle and the sea.
The Spa at over 6,365 square feet was handcrafted by the same family of Maya masons that have been working with Maroma founder and architect, Jose Louis Moreno, for over four decades. This long standing creative collaboration is one of the reasons that guests and photographers rave about the visual beauty of the resort. In addition, Jose Luis's strong belief in the Maya study of astrological alignment and energy channels has given the Kinan spa its spiritual essence -- each building and treatment room has been aligned to the stars to ensure positive energy flow so the body, mind and spirit are at peace.
Spar:
White and cream stucco finishes, carved niches, arched windows and doorways, Conchuela (shell) floors from the Yucatan complimented with loose river stone borders, hand-hewn beams made from the local Zapote trees and native hard wood furnishings all provide an authentic yet soothing environment. Strategically placed windows and alfresco corridors provide sunbeams, fresh ocean breezes and bird songs from the jungle.
Spa Amenities:
Three treatment rooms ? each with its own shower, bathroom, and treatment tub
Two wet/dry sauna and cold plunge pool treatment rooms
Manicure/Pedicure room
One Massage tower with 360 degree views capturing both jungle and sea ecosystems
Two Relaxation Rooms
One Roof top yoga and meditation pavilion

The flower of life symbol is incorporated into the design of the pool and is considered sacred among many cultures around the world, both ancient and modern. Within this symbol can be found all the building blocks of the universe and the symbol is often used as a metaphor for the connectedness of all life and spirit within the universe.

El Sol Restaurant
El Sol features both indoor and outdoor beachfront dining. For many gastronomes, breakfast is among one of Maroma's crowning achievements. Hearty beginnings start with pots of freshly brewed coffee or steamy mugs of Mexican Hot cocoa, a rainbow palette of mangoes, watermelon and papayas, and at least six choices of freshly squeezed tropical juices. Just-baked croissants, pecan rolls, cheese pockets and cornbread Gourmet hailed as among the world's best, are decadent, while pain au chocolate and raspberry cactus jam burst with flavor.
By night, El Sol is illuminated by candles and torches. The outdoor dining area features a stone kitchen where the chef prepares a weekly seafood dinner on the grill. The main dining room features 20 foot vaulted ceilings with a carving of Xux Ex the ?Descending God,? as the center piece watching over diners. The walls feature original paintings from resident artist Bertand Castelli. Known as the Paul Gauguin of Maroma, the resort currently features his entire first collection of work, which celebrates the female form set within regional scenes and images of Maroma.
The chef serves Yucatan inspired cuisine complemented by an extensive wine cellar. Items include guacamole made table-side, Yucatan lime soup and Cochinita Pibil, a traditional Maya pork dish prepared with achiote, peppercorns, garlic, a dash of cream a hint of cumin and a few drops of orange juice, all wrapped in banana leaves and gently baked with chopped chilies and onions.
Maroma's well-selected wine list of 60 offerings includes European, South American, Californian, and Mexican vintages that compliment the personality of the cuisine.
