Declared a
National Wildlife Reserve in 1961. Contoy Island is internationally famous
for its flora and fauna. Sheltered saltwater lagoons surrounded by mangrove and
palms, make it the most important refugee for birds in the Caribbean.
Large colonies of brown pelicans and magnificent frigates share Contoy with
herons, pink spatulas, swallows, ibis, and the occasionally flock of flamingos.
